Kano Gov Vows to Eliminate Trachoma,Takes Ownership of Trachoma Trichiasis Project

The Kano State Government Vows to Ensure total eradication of Trachoma disease in the state.

The Commissioner for Health Dr Abubakar Labaran Disclosed this during the formal taken ownership of the Trachoma Trichiasis project,held in Kano.

The Commissioner said taken ownership of the program follows the closure of the project supported by the Health and Development Support Program (HANDS) and the handing over of the transition plan to the state government.

Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, commended the efforts of the organisations for offering the support,and salutes the dedication and commitment of Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf.

He highlighted the successes achieved through the project, including training of healthcare workers, management of Trachoma Trichiasis cases, and conduct of Mass Drug Administration campaigns.

The explained that project achieved significant milestones, including,Training of 21 ophthalmic nurses and 40 PHC workers on TT surgeries.

Management of backlog of 35,966 cases of Trachoma Trichiasis , Conduct of targeted Mass Drug Administration campaigns in ten LGAs,Training of 12,100 Community Directed Distributors and Case Finders in 40 LGAs.

Other achievement includes Active house-to-house case search across the state,Rehabilitation of 122 boreholes and construction of 3 new boreholes.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to controlling and eliminating Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), praising the support of the Federal Ministry of Health, HANDS, and SIGHTSAVERS International

The Country Director,Sighsavers Nigeria DR. Joy Shuiabu said
Sighsavers would continue to support Kano state government in ensuring that Trachoma Trichiasis or being eliminated in the state and the country at large .

She said Kano State has taken the lead in the fight against Trachoma Trichiasis,urging other States across the federation to emulate the gesture.

Director program Health and development Support program Dr. Innocent Emereuwa lauded Kano State Government for attaining greater Heights in the fight against Trachoma Trichiasis.
