A Professor of Polymer Chemistry Mrs Doris Ezekiel Boryo has advised Young Chemists in the country to be innovative in thinking so as to drive large scale industrialisation especially in the pharmaceutical sector.

Professor Doris Boryo of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University ATBU Bauchi gave the advice at the Public Lecture and Induction of 60 graduates of Chemistry as Graduate Members of the Chemical Society of Nigeria held at Yelwa Campus in Bauchi metropolis.

In a paper titled “Empowering the next generation of Chemists, Sharing a future of Innovation and Impact”, Professor Doris Boryo said the chemist is by training at the heart of every aspect of human endeavour to include drugs discovery, development of agricultural inputs, production of renewable and clean energy, electronics and transportation among others.

“The chemist is at the heart of drugs discovery, development of agricultural inputs (fertilisers, pesticides), electronics and transportation, production of renewable & clean energy. I want to urge you to use local resources available like sheer anc castor oils to produce local & organic products like soap,pomade, lotions and even detergents”, She counsels.

While charging the inductees to leverage on existing local resources in making organic products, the Academic noted that financial supports are readily available in both public and private sectors for the funding of their investment ideas.

“You can get the required funds to establish your businesses through many government and private organisations like the NIYF, Tony Elumelu Foundation, Bank of Industry and many more”, Professor Boryo says.

In another paper on the Impact of Innovative and responsible practices in Chemistry, another Guest Lecturer Dr Haruna Adamu charged the inductees to the abundant natural endowments like solar and green energies to solve the problems of climate change in their respective communities.

“Once a Chemist knows how to cook, he has set the stage for success. The chemist recreates from the natural endowments of the Creator such as Solar and Green energy which can be used to reduce carbon emission and promote a healthy environment “, Dr Haruna highlights.

The Acting Vice Chancellor ATBU Professor Sani Usman represented by the Dean Faculty of Management Sciences Professor Sama’ila Idi Ningi who said the inductees have now graduated from students to professionals and from learners to innovators, urged them to harness their skills as chemists and combining them with an entrepreneurial mindset for economic growth.

“The chemical industry is a critical driver of economic growth, providing the foundation for a myriad of other industries, from agriculture to pharmaceuticals, from energy to consumer goods. By harnessing your skills as chemists and combining them with an entrepreneurial mindset, you have the ability to create ventures that can address critical needs in our nation, contribute to job creatión, and foster economic development”, Kunya gingers.

In separate goodwill messages, the Rector Federal Polytechnic Bauchi Alhaji Sani Usman represented by the Deputy Rector Dr Dalhatu Sa’idu, the Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Dr Habiba Muda Lawal represented by Dr Nuratu Adamu and Professor Muhammed Harami Adamu advised the inductees to be resources and innovative so as to become producers instead of consumers.

Speaking after administering the Induction Oath, the State Chairman Chemical Society of Nigeria, Dr Auwal Mahmud expressed hope that the graduands would be of good moral conduct and shun quackery for the advancement of the field.
