The North East Zonal Director, Federal Competition and Protection Council says Consumer rights are not properly protected in Nigeria.

The zonal director of the council, better known as Consumer Protection Council, Yahaya Garba Kudan made the assertion during a telephone interview with Radio Nigeria from Bauchi.

The North East Zonal Director of Consumer protection Council,Yahaya Garba Kudan said, consumers have certain rights they are entitled to such as the right to information on product or services, right to redress through refund or replacement of the product, right to safety, right to be educated, and right to choose by selecting freely from range of products or services needed.

Yahaya Garba said, all these rights existed but the problem is that consumers do not know about them hence the establishment of the council to help educate the consumers of those rights, even though according to him the council itself is having challenges of manpower.

He said the council, in its efforts to be more effective, it had collaborated with media organizations, National orientation agency NOA and also directed to liaise with local government chairmen to be given desk officers at the local government level.

According to him, the council receives complaints more often from the financial and electricity sectors of the economy thereby calling on consumers to know that their rights do not end only on products, but services as well.

The zonal director called on consumers to always concentrate on all given information needed for a particular product or service intended to patronize.

He therefore urged consumers to report any dissatisfaction of a production or service to the council, when all necessary steps taken to resolve the complain between the consumer and the producer or the the marketer failed.
