Gombe State Deputy Governor, Doctor Manassah Daniel Jatau, has described sports as a unifying factor, a source of livelihood and capable of generating millions of employment to the teaming youths.
The Deputy Governor gave the description when declaring open draws for the first edition of Dan Majen Gombe football competition and inauguration of organising committee held at Amina Hall, Gombe.
The Deputy Governor explained that their administration is committed to harnessing potentials of the youths especially in the area of sports to reap the benefit embedded in the sector.
He further said that the government of Inuwa Yahaya will continue to support sporting activities because of the derivable benefits which includes, providing an opportunity for adventures and learning to the athletes, promotion of friendship, unity and cohesion among individuals and nations.
The deputy governor challenged the Committee Members to be fair in officiating, and the participating athletes to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship with the consideration that it is not a matter of do or die.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, Dasuki Jalo waziri, who assured of the support of the ministry and all the Local governments in the state said, in competitions like this new talents will be captured by big football teams.
The Chairman sports commission Alhaji Adamu Hamza Soye said the Competition tagged "Dan Majen Gombe Football Competition 2021" is first of it's kind aimed at celebrating the achievements of the Governor in the state.
He said two teams are expected to feature in each of the 114 political wards in the state, making a total of 228 teams access the state.
The Chairman added that the tournament is not going to be sponsored by government fund but by contributions from spirited individuals, lovers of sports and government officials, pointing out that already people have started indicating their interest to assist in the sponsorship.
The chairman Football Association of Gombe State, Mr Yakubu Sarma thanked the governor for the support to Gombe United football club and appealed that the gesture be extended to other clubs playing at other competitions.
Chairman Nationwide League Malam Hashimu Ibrahim also thanked the government for the support so far, explaining that about two hundred and thirty football teams are expected to participate in this competition.
He appreciated the Governor and particularly his Deputy for always being there and on time to support them.
