The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has launched a major digital reform to modernize cargo clearance and disposal across the country\u2019s ports and inland terminals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The initiative, rolled out in Customs Zones B and D, introduces a centralized automated platform to manage overtime cargo consignments left uncleared for more than 120 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking during the event Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi represented by Comptroller of Post-Clearance Audit, Zone B, Deborah Adeniyi described the platform as a cultural shift designed to replace inefficiency with transparency and speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is not just automation; it is a transformation,\u201d Adeniyi said. \u201cEvery step, from application to final clearance or disposal, is now time-stamped and digitally tracked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said under the Nigerian Customs Service Act 2023, the system enforces strict timelines for condemning, auctioning, or otherwise disposing of abandoned goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Importers can now file applications, monitor progress, and receive approvals online from any location, reducing corruption risks and freeing valuable terminal space.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Adeniyi Urged Stakeholders in Kano, Kaduna, Niger, Kogi, Kebbi, and Jigawa states to train their personnel and embrace the new process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trade experts say the reform could significantly enhance Nigeria\u2019s role in regional and global commerce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Economist Hauwa Bello noted that faster cargo flow will help Nigeria seize opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEfficient ports are critical for regional integration,This reform signals Nigeria\u2019s seriousness about becoming a competitive gateway for African trade.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Industry operators, including the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders, welcomed the move, calling it a \u201cgame-changer\u201d that will save businesses millions in demurrage and warehousing fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
