Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has task journalists to take a leading role in combating the spread of disinformation, misinformation, and fake news, particularly in the digital space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Governor made the call on Tuesday at the 2025 Triennial Delegates\u2019 Conference of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Borno State Council, held at the International Conference Centre, Musa Usman Secretariat in Maiduguri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Governor Zulum emphasized that the proliferation of manipulated information and weaponized content, if left unchecked, poses a significant threat to national security, peaceful coexistence, and sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNUJ, which is the umbrella body of all practicing journalists in the country, has been at the forefront of promoting the ideals of journalism practice in an era of information overload characterized by disinformation and misinformation,\u201d Zulum stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe theme of the conference: \u201cBeyond The Threats to Journalism: Strengthening Journalists\u2019 Capacity in Promoting Democracy in Nigeria” is apt in view of the perilous challenges facing the profession and the democratization of the digital and media spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Zulum represented by his Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya emphasized the need for sustained digital and media literacy campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe emergence of social media, powered by information and communication technologies, has provided a veritable platform for the expression of views with prejudice, which sometimes undermines national security, peaceful coexistence and sustainable development,\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt is, therefore, imperative for the Union to take the lead in digital and media literacy to professionally tackle the menace of fake news, information manipulation and weaponised contents, he emphasized\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Governor Zulum expressed his administration commitment to freedom of expression and the press \u201cHowever, we should be mindful of spreading information and contents capable of undermining the relative peace and derailing the trajectory of development and recovery effort put in place by the present administration\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He commended journalists in the state for the objective and professional reportage of developmental activities of his administration, urging them, to align their reportage with the comprehensive recovery projects and programmes \u201cOur recovery plan is anchored on peace and security, building resilience, sustainable development, economic revitalization and human capital development,\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
