The Gombe State Government says it has revitalised more than 100 Primary Healthcare Centres and recruited over 1,200 health professionals as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery across the state.<\/p>\n
The achievements were highlighted at the two-day 2026 Joint Annual Review (JAR), where stakeholders assessed progress in the health sector and outlined priorities for 2027 under the theme, “Strengthening Health Systems through Collaboration, Accountability and Sustainable Financing.”<\/p>\n
Delivering the keynote address, the Commissioner for Health, Professor Danladi Bojude, said the achievements reflect the commitment of Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s administration to improving access to quality healthcare through sustained investments in infrastructure, human resources, health financing and digital innovation.<\/p>\n
Professor Bojude said the revitalisation of more than 100 Primary Healthcare Centres has brought quality healthcare services closer to underserved communities across the state. He added that the Gombe State Specialist Hospital has been renovated and re-equipped, while construction of a modern Mother and Child Hospital is ongoing to reduce maternal and child mortality.<\/p>\n
The Commissioner said the recruitment of over 1,200 health professionals has strengthened service delivery across health facilities. He added that the Gombe State Contributory Healthcare Scheme now provides health insurance coverage for more than 350,000 vulnerable residents, reducing out-of-pocket healthcare expenses.<\/p>\n
According to him, routine immunisation coverage has exceeded 85 percent in several local government areas, while the introduction of digital health information systems is supporting real-time, evidence-based planning and decision-making.<\/p>\n
While acknowledging the progress recorded, the Commissioner said challenges remain in ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare, strengthening primary healthcare services and improving health outcomes. <\/p>\n
He also called on government agencies, development partners, professional associations and civil society organisations to deepen collaboration in implementing the Sector-Wide Approach anchored on the “One Plan, One Budget, One Report and One Conversation” agenda.<\/p>\n
Also speaking, the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics in the Gombe State Ministry of Health and Sector-Wide Approach Desk Officer, Dr. Siraj Abdulkareem, described the Joint Annual Review as a critical exercise that provides the foundation for the state’s Annual Operational Plan.<\/p>\n
Dr. Abdulkareem said the review enables stakeholders to assess performance midway into the implementation year, identify achievements and challenges, and agree on strategies for improving healthcare delivery. He urged all stakeholders to sustain successful interventions, address identified gaps and intensify efforts towards achieving better health outcomes.<\/p>\n
The meeting, organised by the Gombe State Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, development partners, civil society organisations and other stakeholders, reviewed the implementation of the 2026 Annual Operational Plan and progress towards Universal Health Coverage.<\/p>\n
Participants noted improvements in maternal and child health, family planning, HIV\/AIDS, tuberculosis control, malaria services and emergency preparedness. They also identified declining routine immunisation, shortages of essential tuberculosis commodities, inadequate domestic financing, weak commodity security and data management challenges as priority areas requiring urgent attention.<\/p>\n
At the end of the review, participants adopted a communiqu\u00e9 resolving to strengthen maternal and child health services, reverse the decline in routine immunisation, improve newborn care, expand HIV and tuberculosis services, strengthen digital health systems, improve commodity security and increase domestic financing for the health sector.
