The North-East Development Commission, NEDC, has commenced a training programme for 280 women and girls in Gombe State on the production of reusable sanitary pads.<\/p>\n
The pilot project, tagged \u201cPads to Prosperity,\u201d is being implemented in four Local Government Areas of the state, which include Gombe, Dukku, Funakaye and Yamaltu Deba.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the training, the Gombe State Coordinator of the NEDC, Mr Usman Muhammad, said the programme was designed to equip 70 participants from each selected LGA with practical skills to produce sanitary pads using locally sourced materials.<\/p>\n
Mr Muhammad explained that the initiative was part of the Commission\u2019s efforts to empower women and improve livelihoods across the North-East.<\/p>\n
He said the project would address menstrual hygiene challenges while creating opportunities for women and girls to become economically self-reliant.<\/p>\n
The NEDC Coordinator added that the Commission was committed to supporting programmes that could improve the living standards of people affected by years of insurgency and underdevelopment in the region.<\/p>\n
The Head of the Youth and Women Empowerment Unit of the NEDC, Dr Constance Ikosomi, who said the project could translate into income-generating opportunities for the beneficiaries, added that that the participants would be trained on the production, packaging and marketing of reusable sanitary pads.<\/p>\n
The Project Implementation Lead and Chief Executive Officer of Virtuous Reusable Sanitary Pads, Tabitha Abimuke, noted that the project would also help reduce school absenteeism among girls who miss classes during their menstrual periods due to a lack of access to sanitary products.<\/p>\n
She said the skills acquired could enable participants to establish small businesses and contribute to improving menstrual hygiene in their communities.<\/p>\n
Some participants, Zainab Abdulhamid and Sadiya Adamo, expressed appreciation to the NEDC for bringing the pilot project to Gombe State.<\/p>\n
They said the training would help them become economically viable and enable them to support themselves and their families.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
