Kano NHRC receives 1500 complaints on human rights violations in 2022

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Kano State office says, it has received 1500 complaints on human rights violations ,from January to December 2022.

The NHRC state Coordinator, Alhaji Shehu Abdullahi, made the disclosure during an interview with Radio Nigeria’s correspondent in Kano.

According to him,out of the total number of cases recieved during the period under review, 1,296 cases were completed, while 204 are pending.

Shehu Abdullahi noted that, 1,320 cases are on sexual violence , threat to life, harmful cultural practices, witchcraft, female genital mutilation and abandonment of family responsibility which took the lion share, while 120 are on children rights such as denial of rights to education, survival, health.

The State Coordinator attributed the high rate of child delinquency to parental negligence,divorce,child labour and molestation, domestic violence,among others

” In Most of the remand homes in Kano, many children are been arraigned before courts with serious capital offence such as rape, kidnapping, manslaughter among others”

“There is need to check the grassroots of these children and address it speedily”,he said.

He added that, NHRC would not relent in it’s efforts of advocating for legal framework in terms of human rights and family law within the state.

Speaking on the role of the national human rights commission (NHRC), on the 2023 general elections, he pointed out that, the commission would commence sensitization of eligible voters to ensure a hitch free exercise.

“We want them to know the right to vote and be voted for since it is a fundamental rights.

Shehu Abdullahi stressed that, there would be a town hall meeting with gubernatorial candidates, in the second week of February as the general election is fast approaching.

He further explained that, the Commission had come up with a project to liase with civil society organisations to monitor prevalence of hate speech, particularly on social media.
