KNSMOH Unravel circumstances surrounding death of pregnant woman at MAWTH

Kano state ministry of health, says there is no connection between the death of a pregnant woman Shema’u Sani, and the rejection of Old Naira notes, at Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital (MAWTH), Kano.
The state commissioner of health, Dr Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa, made the disclosure while briefing newsmen.
According to him, the policy on all medical emergencies, ensures that first aid management must be carried out to save lives before formalities.
The commissioner maintained that, health personnel, especially those working in accident and emergency, paediatric units and Labour rooms, are at the forefront of protecting the lives of patients.
Dr. Aminu Tsanyawa explained that, the 33 year old Shema’u Sani, undergoing anti natal at another health facility, was presented to the hospital around 5pm on 11th February 2023, with complain of PV bleeding, and cessation of fatal movement.
He highlighted that, she was attended by the doctor on call, who provided all the necessary assistance including setting of IV Lines, taking blood sample, for grouping and cross matching in preparation for blood transfusion, urine sample and bedside analysis where the presence of protein in her urine was detected.
The commissioner pointed out that, the doctor later did a detailed clinical examination, where he found her to have mild anemia, a BP of 150/90mmhg with tachycardia, and marked abdominal pain with absent fetal heart sound.
“He made a diagnosis of Abruptio with Intrauterine fetal death secondary to preeclampsia, patient was given Magnesium sulphate and started augmentation of labour for the patient under close monitoring. “The labour progress, 6 hours later, she delivered a fresh still birth at around 11pm.”
He however, stressed that, Shema’u started bleeding profusely, while the doctor on call, made an assessment of primary postpartum hemorrhage, and quickly attempted to stop the bleeding.
“She was given all the necessary medications and had first point of blood given and the second one started around 1:00pm, Patient condition was noticed to be deteriorating the doctor, call other senior doctors who supported in resurrection but unfortunately, the patient gave up and was certified dead around 3:50pm”.
