Tuggar Initiative Trains 40 Disabled Women on Beverage Making in Bauchi

Disabled women and beneficiaries of an empowerment programme in Bauchi State, have pledged to put into practice what they have learned with a view to enhance their economic status.
The programme launched by a Non-Governmental Organization, Kyautata Wa Iyali Maitama Tugga Community Empowerment Initiative, taught the beneficiaries how to make beverages locally, using Cocoa, Sugar, and different varieties of flavours.
The NGO also provided the beneficiaries with starter packs of all the items required to make the products.
Some of the beneficiaries, Jummai Benjamin and Halima Muhammad Sani said the empowerment programme had exposed them to a self-sustaining business.
They said apart from teaching them how to make the product, the initiative also links them with customers who would always be ready to buy the products after processing.
Another beneficiary Hauwa’u Shehu Fada said the empowerment programme was the first of its kind that identified people with special needs to teach them how to become self-reliant.
Surayya Abubakar who told Radio Nigeria that this initiative was apt in view of the country’s economic down turn urged other organizations as well as well-meaning Nigerians not to abandon people with special needs in the implementation of any empowerment project.
Earlier speaking, the State Coordinator of the initiative Hajiya Samina Alka urged the beneficiaries to ensure good use of the starter packs provided for them to be self-reliant.
Radio Nigeria learnt that forty disabled women, comprising 20 blind and 20 crippled undergone the empowerment programme.
