The United Nations children’s fund (UNICEF) officer in-charge field office Kano ,Michael Banda has Charged governments, development partners, mother’s and the media to join hands together for success of the campaign.
Banda stated this during rountabale meeting with the media on 2021 would breastfeeding week organized by Abubakar Rimi Television in collaboration with UNICEF Kano office.
He said the theme of this year’s event is “a shared Responsibility to support breastfeeding and promote zero water campaign” was in line with the sensitization campaign on the importance of breastfeeding in order to have a healthy people in 2030 year to come.
Mr Banda said children that are exclusively breastfed for two years have a 19 percent chance of survival, adding that if a child is put to breastfeeding within one hour of his birth it reduces malnutrition and child mortality cases and they are protected from infections.
However, the in-charge Field Officer, worried that in Kano, exclusive breastfeeding is only 18 percent this is coupled with poor environmental challenges, resulting in a high rate of child mortality and malnutrition.
He said exclusive breastfeeding from 0-6 and 6-24 months protects children from stunting and reduces possible defects in educational IQ of a child and brightens his livelihood.
“Exclusive breastfeeding from birth to 6 months and beyond contributes 30 percent of child survival indices and reduces child mortality by 13 percent,” he said.
The UNICEF officer strengthened the need for the partnership with media in order to Achieved sucees in the Advocacy for effective breastfeeding among infants .
In his paper presentation a Dietist and deputy director state primary health care Management board Murtala Inuwa said the event was organized globally every 1st to 7th of August by the United Nations since 1990.
Murtala Inuwa said exclusive breastfeeding that is from zero hour to 6th months contain 100 percent of what child needs.
He Appealed to All Stakeholders involved to joined the Vanguard,geared towards ensuring that the Stated Goals were Achieved.
