The Federal Government has announced plans to track the performance of state governments in the education sector.
State Minister of Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, made the disclosure during a one-day Northern Region Dissemination Meeting on the National Policy on Skills Development in Formal and Non-Formal Education in Nigeria.
Prof. Suwaiba said the Federal Government has provided an enabling environment for education to thrive despite numerous challenges.
She emphasized the importance of implementing the National Policy on Skills Development to ensure that pupils and students acquire relevant skills .
The Minister explained that the policy aims to migrate from theory to practical-based learning, covering both formal and non-formal education.
“This approach is expected to equip students with skills that are relevant to the job market “
The Permanent Secretary, Mr. Abel Oniyitan, represented by Dr. Mrs Muibay Olodo ,said the Ministry is partnering with relevant stakeholders to formulate policies that will improve the education sector .
The UNICEF representative, Munamuzunga Sikaulu, said the organization has been partnering with the Federal Ministry of Education for over 50 years.
He noted that UNICEF has aligned with the Ministry in launching the program, which aims to promote skills development in Nigeria .
The event featured paper presentations from experts in the education sector, including Jackson Nweke from the Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Habib Ahmad Jibrin from the National Education Research and Development Council, and Dr. Yusuf Suleiman from the National Board for Technical Education .
The meeting was attended by key stakeholders in the education sector, including the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and Commissioners of Education from various states.
