The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Yobe Council has condemned the physical assault of an NTA reporter, Babagana Kolo, by the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the Yobe State Government House, CSP Yakubu Zakari Deba, during the 2026 budget presentation at the Yobe State House of Assembly complex, in Damaturu.

The statement, jointly signed by the Council Chairman, Comrade Rajab Ismail Mohammed, and the Council Secretary, Alhassan Sule Mamudo, demands accountability and calls for an immediate investigation into the incident.

According to the statement, CSP Deba, who has served in the Yobe Government House for almost twenty years, should be held responsible for the injuries of the assaulted NTA reporter.

It therefore urges the authorities concerned to act swiftly and emphasise that press freedom is non-negotiable.

The Council further applauded NTA Damaturu for reporting the assault.
