Climate change remained a global topic taken the Centre stage at every aspect of contemporary World which every Continent was grappling to combat its impacts on both Plants and Animals.
For developing nations like Nigeria, the severity of the impact of Climate change was more on Savannah vegetation especially Sahel Savannah which Borno State is part of it.
Efforts have been made by Government, Stakeholders, Non Governmental Orgaizations and even ordinary People to mitigate the impact of Climate Change as it has became unbearable for many due to the weather patterns that is unfavourable which also affects economic activities.
Speaking on the causes of Climate Change and the measures adopted to address its negetive impact, the Director General Borno State Agency For Great Green Wall (BOAGGW), Mr Usman Aliyu who is also Member Nigeria Geo Science and Mining Society, attributed that the ignorance of many Persons of inducing green house gases into the environment such as Chlorofluorocarbon, Carbondioxide, Mehfil gases, and Water Vapour which are gases emanated as a result of human anthropogenic activities and Socio economic activities contributing to the causes of Climate Change.
Mr Usman Aliyu added that deforestation is another factor contributing to the causes of Climate Change which is cutting down of trees, as according to him trees serves as Carbon sink to the green houses gases, the rate at which trees are been cut will be amounting to the Climate Change.
Another factor causing Climate Change is the burning of fossil fuels which led to the depletion of ozone layer and in turn resulted in global warming as well as Climate Change.
The Director General Borno State Agency For Great Green Wall explained that our Cars, Generators, hub Machines and even grinding Machines for domestic use were using fossil fuels which emmits Carbondioxide that is responsible for global warming. He stressed that Chlorofluorocarbon is significantly responsible for the deplation of ozone layer which similarly comes from Refrigerators, Air Conditions and the use of aurosoles.
These according to him are parts of the causes of the global warming as well as the Climate Change which commences to manifest thirty to thirty five years back with inconsistency in the weather patterns, shrink of the lakes and other water sources used for Socio economic activities, unusual increase in the rays and hits of the Sun, unequal rainfall patterns of year to year and e.t.c.
Mr Usman Aliyu noted that afforestation are some of the measures adopted to mitigate the impact of Climate Change which a Person is required to not only plant a tree, but also protect and nurture to the maturity level. To this end a Person is discouraged to cut down a tree or off root it, rather cut some shares and use it.
The Director General Borno State Agency for Great Green Wall said the Agency planted more than a million seedlings of both economic and non economic trees at Public Institutions like Schools, hospitals, Government Institutions and Parastatals as well as Streets and highways.
On the 13th of January, 2026, the Agency commences its 2026 afforestation programme with a flag-off ceremony at the Zarmari Primary Healthcare Centre in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State. The exercise marks the beginning of this year’s statewide tree planting campaign aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, combating desertification and enhance the aesthetic and ecological value of public institutions across the State as part of ongoing efforts to make Borno Greener and more Climate-resilient.
He added that the Agency also planned to plants additional seedlings amounting to over three (3) million by also inviting an interested Individual to take part in the Campaign by planting it at their residential places and Communities.
Mr Usman Aliyu further advocated waste management as a way of mitigating Climate Change, that is to recircle waste for better purposes than grounding it which will culminate into Carbondioxide or Chlorofluorocarbon.
