FG Steps Up Efforts To Combat Maternal Mortality .

In its quest to rveduce the alarming rate of maternal mortality in Nigeria, the Federal Government has launched a nationwide initiative aimed at improving access to quality healthcare for pregnant women and new mothers.

The Maternal And Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative, convened by the Federal Ministry of Health, brings together stakeholders from various development partners, state governments, and local communities to brainstorm modalities for ensuring the success of the program.

According to the National Coordinator of the program Muntaka Umar represented by Dr. Ashiru Abubakar, said the Federal Government is committed to tackling maternal mortality, which is a key objective of the President Ahmad Bola Tinubu-led administration.

“Addressing maternal mortality is among the key objectives of this administration, and we are collaborating with all necessary stakeholders to crush down the menace of maternal mortality,” Dr. Abubakar emphasized.

He said the initiative is a response to the staggering statistics on maternal mortality in Nigeria.

“According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 4.5 million women and babies die every year during pregnancy, childbirth, or the first weeks after birth, with Sub-Saharan Africa accounting for 66% of these deaths.

Nigeria is among the countries with the highest maternal mortality rates”

He noted that the Federal Government’s initiative is a step in the right direction, and stakeholders must work together to ensure its success.

The Kano Commissioner for Health Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf noted that the state has made significant progress in reducing maternal mortality since the current administration took office.

“We have introduced free maternal care, coupled with community surveillance on family planning, which has yielded positive results,” Dr. Yusuf said.

He reassured the Commitment of Kano State Government in Collaborating with the federal government and other development partners with a view to addressing the challenge of maternal Mortality.

The event was graced by stakeholders from different part’s of the country.
