The North East Development Commission, NEDC, has donated working equipment to journalists who were involved in a motor accident during an inspection tour in Bauchi State.
Receiving the items, the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya Abdullahi, appealed to the Commission to pay the health insurance fees of practising journalists in the North East sub-region.
Comrade Alhassan Yahaya made the appeal while receiving the equipment purchased by the NEDC to support journalists affected by the accident that occurred during the Commission’s inspection tour in Bauchi State.
He explained that the NUJ leadership has introduced a health insurance scheme requiring every practising journalist to pay forty thousand naira, and urged the Commission to consider settling the fees on behalf of journalists in the zone.
According to him, the initiative aligns with the agenda of the present administration and will contribute significantly to the provision of quality and affordable healthcare services.
The NUJ President also commended the NEDC for its prompt intervention after the accident, noting that the support helped save many lives.
Earlier, the Minister of Regional Development, Magari Ahmadu, said the Commission donated new working equipment to journalists who were involved in the accident and were part of the NEDC entourage during the inspection tour to Yelwan Duguri in Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
In his remarks, the Managing Director of the Commission, Muhammad Alkali, disclosed that the items donated include video cameras, still cameras, tripods, among others.
