The Borno State Police Command has successfully repelled coordinated terrorist attacks on Nganzai and Damasak communities, restoring normalcy and reinforcing security deployments in the affected areas.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso explained that the first attack occurred on April 4, 2026, at about 1:00 a.m., when armed terrorists suspected to be members of Boko Haram/ISWAP attempted to overrun the Nganzai Divisional Police Headquarters.
According to the Command, police operatives, including Mobile Police Force personnel and a crack squad on special duty, engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle.
The assailants, who reportedly used Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs) and other sophisticated weapons, damaged a section of the station and partially burnt an unserviceable Armoured Personnel Carrier. Four police personnel were killed during the encounter.
In a related development at about 2:40 a.m. the same day, terrorists attacked the Mallam Fatori Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Damasak, targeting a Civilian Joint Task Force and hunters’ duty post at the camp entrance.
During the attack, one member of the hunters’ group, identified as Atom Abua, aged 40, lost his life, while about 20 thatched houses and other property were destroyed.
The Command said that in both incidents, combined teams of the Police, Military, Civilian Joint Task Force and local hunters swiftly responded, repelled the attackers, and prevented further destruction.
Borno State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, has since deployed additional personnel and operational assets to the affected areas to strengthen security, intensify ongoing operations, and forestall further attacks.
He commended the gallantry and resilience of the officers who confronted the assailants, while also extending condolences to the families of the fallen personnel.
The Commissioner assured that the Command remains committed to tracking down the perpetrators and bringing them to justice, urging residents to remain calm, vigilant, and continue to provide credible information to security agencies.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of lives and property across Borno State, adding that further updates will be communicated as developments unfold.
