A powerful sandstorm has blown off the roof of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, secretariat in Damaturu, causing extensive damage to equipment and parts of the building.
The incident occurred at the earlier hours on Monday, leaving air conditioners, ceiling fans, and solar-powered equipment damaged.
Speaking while assessing the destruction, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Yobe State, Rajab Mohammed, said the latest incident happened while the union leadership was already carrying out repairs on another section of the secretariat earlier destroyed by a windstorm on Sunday.
He explained that the matter had been reported to the state government to attract support for the rehabilitation of the damaged roof.
According to him, journalists urgently need access to the building to effectively carry out their professional duties.
Rajab Mohammed also noted that the appeal for government intervention had become more necessary as the country approaches another election season, when politicians and political groups often rent the NUJ hall for meetings and engagements.
