The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University ATBU Bauchi has introduced a new policy of recognising and awarding commendation Letters to all its 200 to 500 levels students with a 4.5 and above Cumulative Grade Point Average CGPA every session.
The recognition policy aimed at motivating and gingering other students to improve their performance is meant for first class students who are categorised under the Vice Chancellor’s list.
The Vice Chancellor of the institution Professor Ibrahim Hassan Garba stated this at the 2024/25 Matriculation and Orientation ceremony of new intakes performed at 1000 Seater Lecture Hall Yelwa Campus Bauchi.
Professor Hassan Garba who said the commendation letter will help them in applying for scholarships and to secure placements during industrial attachments and jobs after graduation, urged other students to put more effort towards achieving excellence as additional incentives would be included next time.
“We are transitioning towards repositioning the university on the path to excellence and of course it is at this level that you begin to capture or motivate students so that they can strive to be the best in their pursuit of knowledge, because this particular innovation is not only aimed at recognising them but also honouring them and the other aim is to awaken that passion in this students that we’ve just matriculated so that they can also put in their best and at the end they can also enter our Hall of fame”, He notes.

The Vice Chancellor urged the matriculants to abide by the rules and regulations of the university and shun cultism, exams malpractice, indecent dressing, drug abuse to guarantee their stay in the institution.

Professor Hassan Garba said out of the eleven thousand that applied, only four thousand three hundred and sixty four passed the rigorous selection process to gain admission in line with the established guidelines and quota system.
“Onc of the determinants that led to this conduct is our very rigorous selection process when we are admitting students. We are very careful the kind of students we admit, we stick to admission guidelines and quota system and that is the whole aim, as you can see the result is that you have this kind of wonderful students and that is the aim. We are in situation that we’re poised to train future leaders therefore we are going to place great emphasis and premium on dress code because it matters in any society”, Professor Garba restates.
The breakdown of those admitted according to him include Faculty of Agriculture amd Agriculture Technology 207, Environmental Technology 774, Engineering and Engineering Technology 854, Management Technology 370, Technology Education 345, Veterinary Medicine 39, Faculty of Computing 599, Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards SPESSE Centre of Excellence 98, Medical Sciences 244, Faculty of Science 835.
The Vice Chancellor used the opportunity to appeal to Bauchi State government to support the institution’s host and neighbouring communities who are educationally disadvantaged with scholarships in order to uplift them.
Hassan Garba also commended the Federal Government for establishing the Nigerian Education Loan Fund NELFUND which is now playing crucial role in enhancing access to quality education especially for indigent students in tertiary institutions across the country.
