The Bauchi State Branch of the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRS), in collaboration with the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme, is set to construct and renovate 300 boreholes in five Local Government Areas of the state that were devastated by floods during the last rainy season.

The State Branch Chairman, Alhaji Aminu Abubakar, disclosed this while answering questions from newsmen in Bauchi. He explained that the affected Local Government Areas are Gamawa, Giade, Jama’are, and Zaki.

Alhaji Aminu Abubakar pointed out that the construction and renovation projects, sponsored by WASH, followed an assessment conducted by the state branch of the NRS on the damages caused by the floods. He noted that if urgent action is not taken, the lives of the affected victims would be at risk, especially in the areas of water, sanitation, and hygiene.

The Branch Chairman stated that the projects are expected to be completed within three months, adding that 70 boreholes, including solar-powered ones, have already been constructed.

He also announced that within the three-month period, the state branch of the society would distribute 3,000 hygiene kits to members of the affected communities as part of efforts to improve hygiene.

While calling on the government, non-governmental organisations, and other donor partners to collaborate with the state branch in saving and improving the lives of vulnerable persons, he cautioned the benefiting communities to safeguard the projects to ensure the achievement of the desired objectives.
