The Federal Government and the Gates Foundation have commended Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, for his administration’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare system.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, alongside the President of Global Development at the Gates Foundation, Mr. Chris Elias, gave the commendation during a courtesy visit to the Gombe State Government House.

The visit aligns with the ongoing implementation of the National Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII), launched by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, under a sector-wide approach to improving healthcare delivery nationwide.

Prof. Pate highlighted Gombe’s remarkable progress in key healthcare indicators, including increased skilled birth attendance, higher immunization coverage, and improved contraceptive use. He attributed these successes to Governor Yahaya’s leadership and the state’s 82% increase in healthcare budget allocation since 2023.

The Gates Foundation also expressed interest in learning from and supporting Gombe’s healthcare advancements, describing the state’s efforts as a model for others.

In his response, Governor Yahaya acknowledged past challenges in the health sector and reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure, expanding medical training institutions, and enhancing manpower. He emphasized the state’s strategy of retaining indigenous doctors, recruiting health workers, and collaborating with the private sector to boost local drug production.

Governor Yahaya reaffirmed his commitment to sustained partnerships with both the Federal Government and the Gates Foundation to further enhance healthcare services in Gombe State.
