Bauchi Secondary Schools Celebrate World Book Copyright Day

Nigerian Copyright Commission in collaborating with National Library of Nigeria, has hosted this year’s World Book and Copyright Day in Bauchi state, with participation from eight secondary schools in the state capital.

The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation, UNESCO has declared 23rd April annually as World Book and Copyright Day, to focus on the book, and to celebrate authors, promote reading, encourage equal access to knowledge and raise Copyright awareness.

In a message, the Director General, National Copyright Commission, Mr John Asein, said the day underscores the importance of reading in building character, stimulating the mind to be more creative and nurturing for persons to realise their potentials.

Mr John Asein, represented by the Director of the Commission in Office, Mr Michael Madueke said to bring Books closer to children, the commission would make prominent book copies to ninety public schools and establish more Copyright and Creative Clubs in those schools.

The Chairman of the occasion and Professor of Library Science Mansur Malumfashi urged young students to imbibe reading culture and shun online entertainment platforms for them to ve intellectually sound.

Professor Malumfashi said this year’s theme of World Book and Copyright Day “Read Your Way” celebrating World Book and Copyright Day was apt in view of the current trend of social media inclination that is diverting the youth attention from reading books.

The occasion recognized the literary works of the internationally recognized Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka and his 90th birthday anniversary where students of the participating schools read some chapters from Soyinka’s books and performed a play from “The Lion and the Jewel”.
