Borno State government has approved the sum of one billion naira for the training of basic-level teachers across the twenty seven local government areas of the state.

Governor Babagana Zulum gave the approval while inaugurating the newly appointed local government education secretaries in Maiduguri.

He noted that over 1,000 teachers who have O-Level certificates as the highest qualification will undergo additional training to enable them to attain minimum teaching qualifications.

“The training would cover teachers who do not have teaching qualifications but were found to be trainable based on the record of the competency test conducted” Zulum said.

Zulum explained that since 2019, his administration has invested heavily in school infrastructure and human capacity which has resulted in the reduction of out-of-school children from over two million to eight hundred thousand.

The Governor charged the newly appointed education secretaries to live up to expectations and warned that anyone found to be underperforming would be replaced.

“ I have directed the Honorable Commissioner for Education to furnish me with quarterly reports on the performance of each education secretary. Those failing to meet expectations will be replaced,” Zulum declared.

Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Lawan Wakilbe said 126 people applied for the position and after conducting competency test, twenty seven were selected based on their performance.

Meanwhile, Governor Babagana Zulum has  allocated fifty eight utility vehicles for the education secretaries and monitoring unit across the twenty seven local government areas.
