In a bid to forestall the effects of fire outbreaks associated with harmattan season, the Federal Fire Service in Gombe State has flagged off a three-day fire safety awareness week campaign on the causes of fire, its prevention, detection, protection and control.

The awareness week is in collaboration with the Gombe State Fire Service.

Addressing the press during the flag-off, the Gombe State Commandant, Deputy Comptroller Fire, DCF Ayuba Jonah Sule said the week aims to carry out a sensitization campaign concerning fire prevention following the series of fire emergency calls being received in Gombe.

He said the common cause of fire incidents in Gombe is caused by electrical appliances.

DCF Ayuba Sule also drew the attention of women to be careful while cooking at home or burning firewood to prevent the spread of firewood.

He said from January to date the command has received about 70 to 80 fire emergency calls of which 18 to 20 fire incidents were devastating.

The Commandant called on the Federal and State Governments to procure more firefighting equipment to add to the already existing ones.
