TCI, DevComs Organises Workshop on Child Birth Spacing for Yobe Journalists.

As part of its commitment toward addressing the lingering issue of the high rate of maternal mortality, the Development Communications Network, (DevComs), with the support of The Challenge Initiative, (TCI), a Non-Governmental Organization, has organized a three-day training workshop for working journalists in Yobe State, on Childbirth Spacing.

While delivering a lecture at the workshop held in Damaturu, the State Capital, the State Programme Manager of the TCI Dr. Philemon Yohanna, said the workshop aimed at strengthening the ability of the media outfits in the state for effective and accurate dissemination of information on the importance of child spacing.

Dr. Yohanna explained that Child Birth Spacing is the easiest way of safeguarding the health of mothers and their children.

The State Programme Manager further commended the Yobe State Government under the able leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni for its support toward ensuring the success of the programme in the state.

The state Coordinator for Reproductive Health at the Yobe State Primary Healthcare Management Board, Hajiya Mairo Hassan, explained that sensitization and awareness campaigns on Child Birth Spacing are yielding positive results in the state, as Women are now patronizing the service more than ever before.

She pointed out that Adolescent and Youth Sexual Reproductive Health (AYSRH) is also an area of concern, stating that educating youths on the situation will help them to avoid sexual unpleasant consequences.

Miss Ndyip Balat, the TCI Social and Behavioral Communication Specialist, described media as partners in progress and added that the media plays a vital role in terms of awareness campaigns, through information sharing.

DevComs media consultant, Comfort Mukollo commended the participants of the programme for their commitments and urged them to use the knowledge Acquired During the Training By Informing the public about the importance of Child Birth Spacing.

In a closing remark, the Chairman Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Yobe State Council Comrade Rajab Mohammed lauded the organization for the capacity-building workshop.

He assures that journalists in the state will work tirelessly by calling the attention of the general public on the importance of childbirth spacing.
