One hundred students of Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Bauchi, have been sensitised on the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law and other legislation addressing Gender-Based Violence.
The one-day sensitisation exposed the students to legal provisions protecting citizens from harmful conduct and violations of consent, with participants demonstrating keen interest throughout the session.
The programme was organised by the Bauchi State Ministry of Justice, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, and the Polytechnic.
Speaking at the event, the Ministry’s Gender Desk Officer, Maimuna Ibrahim, said the sensitisation aimed to familiarise students with laws protecting individuals from harmful behaviour.
She stressed that consent remained fundamental in physical and emotional interactions, noting that actions carried out without consent could contravene provisions of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law.
The Polytechnic Rector, Dr Hashim Sabo Bello, represented by the Director of Ethics and Compliance, Dr Abdulkadir Waziri, appreciated the organisers and pledged institutional compliance.
The UNFPA State Programme Officer, Deborah Tabara, also commended the Polytechnic for mobilising students, noting the sensitisation would guard them against violating the law.
Some of the participants described the session as an eye-opener whose lessons would guide them throughout their lives.
