The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria MDCN has warned that any Doctor found guilty of committing grave offense will be deregistered from the council’s register as a certified medical practitioner.

The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer CEO of the Council, Dr Fatima Kyari sounded the warning at the Induction ceremony of 25 Pioneer Medical Doctors of the College of Medical Sciences of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University ATBU, Bauchi.

Dr Fatima Kyari who is the first female Registrar of the council reminded the medical inductees that the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal MDPDT with the status of a Federal High Court has the powers to order the erasure of any erring Doctor’s name from the Register in case of grave offenses.

“Because you stand out in society, and for the safety of patients, I cannot overemphasise the importance of upholding the ethics of the medical profession and the expected conduct of doctors. Erring and defaulting doctors will face the law and will be subjected to disciplinary measures”, the Registrar restates.

She said medicine is a procedural and hierarchical profession with respect for seniority, hence the need for the inductees to ensure that respect is mutual and reciprocal with other members of the healthcare team, nurses, and all stakeholders.

“You have been trained by very competent Teachers and you fully understand the art and science of medicine. These play out in your behaviour and character. As you excel in the science of medicine, do not fail to imbibe the art and skills too, especially now that the global trend of patient centred care is very pertinent”, She reminds.

According to the MDCN Registrar, the mandatory two years housemanship registration portal contains only Federal Hospitals at the moment, noting that the inductees are free to approach any of the 112 fully accredited State Governments, Military and Private Facilities for their housemanship placement.

“The Council will register you after this induction ceremony and provide you with
the Provisional Registration (PR). You are required to utilise the PR to create
accounts individually on the MDCN Centralised Housemanship Placement portal (www.housemanship.mdcn.gov.ng) and subsequently return there to select the available Hospitals of your choices for your mandatory housemanship training.
You complete your Housemanship training within two (2) years of your registration”, Dr Kyari explains.

The Vice Chancellor ATBU Bauchi Professor Muhammad Ahmad Abdul’azeez said the idea of establishing a Medical college was to expand the horizon of the University to increase its academic and community presence in service and the need to increase the production of Medical Doctors in the State, the North-East and Nigeria as a whole.

Professor Abdul’azeez represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics Professor Sani Usman Kunya acknowledged the efforts made by the Malam Isa Yuguda administration towards the realisation of a befitting Teaching Hospital by surrendering its only specialist hospital and the establishment of the
College itself.

“Against resistance from opposing quarters that a medical college should not be established in a technology based University, Malam Isa Yuguda administration helped us to weather this baseless storm and the rest is now history”, he reminiscences.

Earlier, the Provost College of Medical Sciences ATBU Professor Sambo Zailani said the 25 inductees were part of the 50 first set of medical students admitted in the 2016/17 academic session.

“The curriculum is designed to graduate medical doctors of international standard, with in-depth and vast knowledge of current state of medicine particularly in the tropics. Ehen fully established, the college plans to offer training in Dentistry, Allied medical professions, and biomedical engineering and prosthesis”, Professor Sambo discloses.

Professor Zailani said the college is making plans to commence training in three out of the six faculties established to include Dentistry, Allied medical professions, and Biomedical Engineering and Prosthesis.

Part of the dignitaries that graced the induction were representatives of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Bauchi Deputy Governor, Former Governor Isa Yuguda, Emir of Bauchi, while Dr Waziri Dogo Muhammad was honored as Medical Elder at the ceremony.
