Yobe Gov. Set up 24-man Committee as Part of Measures to Address Issue of Artificial Food Scarcity.

Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has inaugurated a twenty-four-man committee on food security in the state as part of the measures to address the artificial scarcity of foodstuff threatens to impose on the state and Nigerian citizenry.

The inauguration ceremony took place at the government house Damaturu.

Represented by his deputy, Idi Barde Gubana, the Governor said, that grappling with the consequences of oil subsidy withdrawal, inflation, unfavorable foreign exchange, and other economic challenges, some unprincipled elements are seriously trying to undermine serenity by causing additional hardship to the people through unnecessary bulk purchase and hoarding of staple food.

Governor Buni explained that the present administration has high sensitivity and swift responsiveness to the yearning and aspirations of its people as its hallmark, adding that the government would not allow such negative development to continue unchecked.

Buni charged the members of the public to cooperate with the committee by providing vital information towards addressing the menace of food insecurity in the state.

The committee is made up of the state deputy governor as chairman, Commissioners of Agriculture, Humanitarian Affairs, Local Government chieftaincy Affairs , Finance, Justice , Environment, and that of ,Information to serve as members.

Other members of the committee include the state Acting head of service, chief of staff to the Governor, Security Adviser to the Governor, Commissioner of Police, Commander of sector 2 Nigeria Army, Director State Security Service, Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Representatives of Customs and Immigration service.

Still on the list, Algon Chairman, Chairman of the Yobe State Council of Chiefs, Representative of civil society organizations, Chairman Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, Chief imam yobe mosque and Islamic Centre, Representative of Grain Dealers, while Secretary to the State Government to served as Secretary of the Committee.

Shortly after the meeting ,the Commissioner of Agriculture and Natural Resources Ali Mustapha Goniri briefed journalists on the resolutions of the committee which included sales of procured grains to the public at subsidized prices, coordinating with security agencies to halt the export of grains outside the country and address the problem of hoarding of grains within the state,and ensure establishment of similar committee at the local government levels to address the problem of food insecurity in the state.
