Bauchi: Participants Advocate Full Implementation of Discrimination Against Persons With Disabilities Prohibition Act 2018

Participants at a day meeting organized by Sharing Education and Learning for Life SELL Foundation advocate full implementation of discrimination against persons with disabilities prohibition act 2018.

They also appealed for the provision of disability desk officers in all Bauchi State Ministries, Departments and Agencies MDAs to ease suffering of people with special needs.

SELL Foundation, Nigeria which is an initiative of St Patrick Missionary Society in West Africa is championing the course of peace building amongst adults and the vulnerable groups in the North East and Plateau State.

One of them, the State Chairman Joint National Association of Persons With Disability, Malam Haruna Saidu Pali expressed concern how people with special needs are being marginalized and denied inclusivity.

In their separate remarks, the state NUJ Chairman Comrade Umar Saidu and his BASNEC counterpart Mr Jinjiri Garba called for unity among all critical stakeholders and holistic approach towards solving identified problems.

In a presentation entitled, Overview of Existing Legal Frameworks and Practices Affecting Persons With Disability in Bauchi State Mr Mainas Ayuba decried how public and private buildings do not make provision for people with special needs to assess their facilities.

Mainas Ayuba who is also the Chairman Bauchi State Network of Disability Forum explained that the 2018 act provides that an individual or group should be suit for discrimination.

In a remark, the Programme Manager Mr Beji Benjamin Jibe said the event with the theme, inclusive services for persons with disabilities would focus on policy discussions, compliance, and awareness regarding people with special needs.

Mr Beji Benjamin Jibe who enjoined the participants to support the crusade against construction of public and private spaces without inclusivity to enable people with special needs have sense of belonging.

The session which featured panel discussion on challenges and opportunities in disability inclusion drew participants from agency for people with disability, members of the Joint National Association of Persons With Disability.

Others are Ministry of Education, Justice, BASAME, RUWASSA, financial institutions, faith based organizations, the Media amongst others.
