North West University Kano Announces 2nd Combined Convocation, New Chancellor Installation.

In a press briefing at the office of the Vice-Chancellor, North West University Kano, Professor Atiku Kurawa welcomed guests and announced the institution’s second combined convocation ceremony.

The university, formerly known as Yusuf Maitama Sule University, officially changed its name to North West University Kano after the Kano State Governor signed a bill into law on December 31, 2024. The National Universities Commission approved the change on July 10, 2025.

Professor Atiku kurawa said the convocation ceremony will take place on July 26, 2025, and will feature the installation of a new chancellor, Justice C.D. Mohamed Baghi Mohamed I, a retired Supreme Court Justice of Nigeria.

He noted that the ceremony will also honor prominent Nigerians with honorary degrees, including,Engineer Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwakwaso, founder of the university and Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil.

Others include Hajiya Mariya Sunusi Dantata, a renowned philanthropist,Late Alhaji Aminu Dantata,Alhaji Aliyu Saidi Bebeji, proprietor of Aliko Oil and Alhaji Adamu Maikifi.

“These individuals have been recognized for their contributions to the university and their impact on the community.”

Professor Kurawa also highlighted the university’s postgraduate program, which was launched in 2021 and currently offers 46 programs.

He maintained that the first cohort of postgraduate students will be graduating during the convocation ceremony.

“A pre-convocation lecture will be held on July 25, 2025, at 4 p.m. at the OST campus, featuring Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, a prominent Nigerian academic, The Honorable Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmed, has also confirmed her attendance at the ceremony.”
