The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has teamed up with the Yobe State Government to provide building materials to flood-affected communities in 13 Local Government Areas of Yobe State.
At the handover ceremony, the Managing Director and CEO of NEDC, Mohammed Goni Alkali, said the initiative aims to alleviate the suffering of those impacted by the floods, with building materials such as roofing sheets, ceilings, iron rods, timber wood and nails being distributed to the affected communities in Damaturu.
Represented by the Yobe State Coordinator for the NEDC, Prof Ali Ibrahim Abbas, the Managing Director emphasised the importance of fair distribution, urging committee members to ensure that the building materials reach those who need them most.
The Yobe State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Dr. Mairo Ahmed Amshi, expressed gratitude to NEDC for their timely intervention, stating that it comes at a time that is needed most.
The Commissioner explained that the initiative is part of NEDC’s broader efforts to support communities affected by insurgency and natural disasters in the Northeast region.
She added that the commission has been involved in various projects, including dry season farming initiatives, environmental sustainability programmes, and training for youth on climate change awareness and adaptation.
The NEDC has also donated rescue equipment to the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to enhance disaster response efforts.
The donated items include rain boots, life jackets, hauling ropes, and search-and-rescue kits.
