North East Development Commission (NEDC) has distributed relief materials worth millions of naira to 248 flood victims that were rendered homeless in Dass local government area of Bauchi State.
The communities affected in the last week’s flood are Baraza, Baɗel, Gibkir, Kardam and Bununu with victims categorised into three, the severely affected, the moderately affected and the least affected.
The palliative distributed include food and non-food items comprising 2,000 bags of 25kg rice, 1,000 cartons of spaghetti, 300 bags of sugar, 600 cartons of 5 litre vegetable oil, 200 bundle of roofing zinc, 1,000 pieces of NEDC branded mats, 500 men’s brocade. 500 women’s wrapper, 5,000 pieces children wears, 1,000 blankets.
Delivering the items at Baɗel community, the Bauchi State Coordinator of NEDC, Alhaji Aliyu Isyaku said the intervention was part of the commission’s humanitarian mandate to offer relief to especially people affect by disasters.
Alhaji Isyaku urged the beneficiaries to judiciously utilise the items stressing the commission’s humanitarian assistance to victims of disasters of this nature.
He commented Bauchi state government and Dass local council for the provision of enabling environment, noting that security agencies play a vital role in ensuring smooth distribution of the items.
Some of the severely affected persons interviewed, Mr Gidion Nadia, Fatima Idris and Isyaka Mohammed from Kardam, Baɗel and Bununu communities respectively, told Radio Nigeria that the flood washed away food and valuable items, as well as demolished some parts of their house assured to
Gidion, Fatima and Isyaku attested to have received five bags of rice (25kg), one bag of sugar (50kg), two blankets, two branded mats, one bundle of roofing zinc, two gallons of 5kg vegetable oil, two women’s wrappers, and two pieces of children’s clothes each.
They expressed joy for what they described as prompt and unprecedented intervention, assuring to judiciously used what they were given with members of their families.
On his part, District Head of Bununu, Alhaji Bilyaminu Bilyaminu Othman, represented by the Zakari Ahmed appreciated NEDC for the gesture, and assured the traditional institution’s support for any intervention geared towards improving people’s livelihood.
