Separated Nigerian Conjoined Twins Return Home After Successful Surgery in Saudi Arabia
Two Nigerian conjoined twins, Hassana and Husaina, have returned home to an emotional welcome at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport after undergoing a successful separation surgery in Saudi Arabia.
The delicate procedure, carried out at the King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, was performed under the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, Prime Minister of the Kingdom.
Hassana and Husaina were flown to Riyadh in October 2023, where they underwent extensive medical examinations.
Doctors revealed that the twins were conjoined at the lower abdomen, pelvis, and spine, sharing vital organs and structures, making the case one of the most complex ever handled under the Saudi Siamese Twins Separation Program.
After months of planning, a multidisciplinary team of 38 consultants and specialists—including pediatric surgeons, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, urologists, anesthesiologists, and plastic surgeons—embarked on the operation.
The surgery lasted about 14 hours and was carried out in nine carefully coordinated stages.
Each stage required extreme precision to safely separate the twins and reconstruct their systems.
Officials described the outcome as a remarkable success, highlighting the expertise of the Saudi medical team and the country’s commitment to humanitarian service.
