As part of activities marking Global Hand Washing Day, the Journalists for Public Health and Development Initiative, J4PD, has sensitised nursery and primary school pupils on the importance of regular hand washing.

Global Hand Washing Day, celebrated annually on 15 October, has as its 2025 theme “Be a Hand Washing Hero,” aimed at promoting hygiene and reducing the spread of infectious diseases worldwide.

Executive Director of J4PD, Ms Elizabeth Kah, said the organisation targeted young pupils because they easily absorb lessons and could help spread the message of proper hygiene practices.

She noted that hand washing remains one of the simplest and most effective ways of preventing disease, stressing that early awareness among children would promote lifelong healthy habits.

Members of J4PD demonstrated proper hand washing steps during the session, after which three pupils replicated the process on stage and were rated excellent by facilitators.

Assistant Head Teacher of Meena’s Scholars’ Academy, Mrs Lawiza Abubakar, expressed gratitude to J4PD for selecting the school and educating pupils on hygiene and disease prevention.

She assured that the school would continue to promote hand washing culture among pupils as part of its daily routine to sustain the gains of the sensitisation exercise.
