In a decisive move to strengthen internal security and protect lives and property, Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has commissioned the Kano State Neighbourhood Watch Corps, unveiling 2,000 trained security personnel to be deployed across the state.
The commissioning ceremony, which marked the official take-off of the community-based security outfit, was held during the passing-out parade at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano.
Speaking at the event, Governor Yusuf said the Neighbourhood Watch Corps was established to bring security closer to the people by operating within local communities and leveraging grassroots intelligence and rapid response.
He explained that the corps members are expected to play a critical role in curbing crimes such as armed robbery, thuggery, street violence,phone snatching and other security threats, particularly at the community level.
The newly trained corps comprises 1,870 males and 130 females, who will be deployed to all the 44 Local Government Areas of Kano State to complement the efforts of conventional security agencies in tackling crime and enhancing public safety.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusif noted that the Neighbourhood Watch Corps forms a key pillar of his administration’s broader security reform agenda, which prioritises community participation, intelligence-driven operations, and strong collaboration with the police and other security agencies.
He urged the newly commissioned personnel to discharge their duties with professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights, assuring them of the government’s continued support.
As part of the commissioning programme, Governor Yusuf also unveiled the operational logistics for the corps, including 88 Hilux patrol vehicles and 440 motorcycles, to enhance mobility and ensure effective coverage of both urban and rural areas of the state.
Chairman Northwest Governors Forum ,Katsina State Governor Dikko Umar radda described the initiative as great milestone towards addressing security challenges in the state.
Speaking on behalf of Emirate Council ,Emir Mohammad Sanusi || urged neighboring states to collaborate Efforts in ensuring that the security challenges were fully addressed.
The event was attended Government officials, security chiefs, traditional rulers, and residents who hailed the initiative as a significant step towards improving security in Kano State.
