The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has called on farmers across the country to increase food production in order to strengthen national food security.
The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, made the appeal during the distribution of farm inputs to farmers’ organisations at an event themed “Inputs Distribution for All-Year-Round Farming” held in Kano.
Represented by the Director of Horticulture in the ministry, Yarima Uba, the minister said it is the mandate of the ministry to provide continuous support to farmers to boost agricultural productivity.
He noted that small holder farmers constitute about 95 per cent of the farming population and remain the backbone of food production in the country.
According to him, sustained support through provision of modern farm inputs would enhance farmers’ morale and encourage bumper harvests.
The State Coordinator of the ministry in Kano, Hajiya Rukayya Abdulkadir disclosed that 80 farmers’ unions comprising over 800 members, including persons with special needs, are beneficiaries of the intervention.
She explained that the initiative is designed to promote inclusive participation in agriculture and ensure year-round farming activities.
The Commissioner, Kano State Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr. Danjuma Mahmud, represented by the Director of Commercial Services, Ibrahim Aliyu, commended the Federal Government for the timely support.
He said the gesture would encourage farmers to return to their farms, especially after the losses encountered in previous farming seasons.
Items distributed at the event included solar water pumps, sprayers, herbicides, insecticides, irrigation pumping machines, threshers and planters aimed at improving productivity and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
