Governor Mai Mala Buni has officially flagged off the reconstruction of the Kilometer Damaturu–Gujba–Buni Yadi–Magza Road in Yobe State, a major infrastructure project undertaken by the North East Development Commission (NEDC).
The symbolic flag-off ceremony was attended by key government officials, including Deputy Governor Hon. Idi Barde Gubana, the Speaker of the Yobe State House of Assembly, NEDC Executive Director (Administration and Finance) Dr. Garba Iliya, and other top officials from both the Commission and the Yobe State Government.
The project, which spans 77 kilometres along the Damaturu–Buni Yadi–Magza corridor, involves a comprehensive asphalt overlay and other critical rehabilitation works. These include material filling, provision of sub-base and base courses on the shoulders, construction of earth drains, and the laying of a 40mm thick asphalt surface.
Execution of the project will be carried out in two phases. Phase I, covering 25 kilometres, has already commenced following the award of the contract and full mobilisation of the contractor to the site.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Buni described the road as a strategic corridor linking Yobe State to Southern Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, and several southeastern states.
He noted that although the road was previously reconstructed during the administration of former Governor Senator Ibrahim Geidam, increased traffic volume in recent years led to significant deterioration, making urgent intervention necessary.
The Governor disclosed that his administration promptly engaged the NEDC to secure funding for the reconstruction. He commended the Commission for responding positively and prioritising the request.
Highlighting the road’s security significance, Buni explained that the highway plays a crucial role in facilitating the movement of security personnel in the fight against insurgency. He added that it will also enhance post-insurgency recovery efforts by enabling farmers to access their farmlands and markets more efficiently.
Governor Buni expressed appreciation to the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for its continued support and urged host communities and contractors to ensure the smooth and timely completion of the project.
In his remarks, NEDC Managing Director, Mohammed Goni Alkali, praised Governor Buni for his proactive leadership and consistent engagement with the Commission.
“Governor Mai Mala Buni has given us all the necessary support. We are fully committed to completing the 77-kilometre Damaturu–Gujba–Magza Road project without interruption,” Alkali assured.
The reconstruction is expected to significantly improve transportation, enhance regional connectivity, strengthen security operations, and stimulate economic activities across Yobe State and beyond.
