Organised Labour-Inflationary trends, high cost of living affecting workers productivity

The Organised Labour in Borno state has called for upward review of workers salary to ameliorate the economic hardship faced by particularly local government workers and other public sectors. 

Chairman Nigeria Labour Congress NLC, Comrade Yusuf Inuwa made the call during the joint commemoration of 2024 May Day in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital. 

Comrade Inuwa observed that inflationary trends and increasing cost of living have negatively affected workers productivity, streesed the need for quick implementation of the new minimum wage.

He identified other workers demand to include harmonisation of health workers salary, implementation of minimum wage and promotion benefit of local government staff as well as upward review of pensions.

“the minimum wage is clearly no longer any meaningful economic value to workers as inflation trends, increasing cost of living is negatively affecting public and private workers productivity ” Comrade Inuwa said.

Chairman Trade Union Congress, Comrade Babayo Hamman commended Borno State government for implementing workers’ friendly policies such as free transportation, payment of five hundred naira gratuity to local government, implementation of promotional benefits among others.

He called on civil servants to continue to have confidence in the leadership of the organised Labour in the state as they are doing everything possible to ensure workers demands are implemented. 

Borno state Governor, Babagana Zulum represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Umar Kadafur said the state government is making frantic effort to alleviate the suffering of people of the state.

He assured to prioritise payment of workers entitlements, training and retraining of civil servants and other welfare packages. 

The theme for the this year’s May Day celebration is ‘People First’ .
