In commemoration of the 2025 International Women’s Day, themed “Accelerate Action,” adolescent girls in the Tirwun community of Bauchi Local Government Area have been sensitised on menstrual hygiene management.
The sensitisation exercise aims to equip the girls with knowledge of menstrual hygiene management and sexual reproductive health education, helping to protect them from infectious diseases.
Our correspondent, Murtala Muhammad, reports that the event was organised by the Bauchi State Chapter of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in partnership with UNICEF, Bauchi Field Office, and was held in Tirwun village.

Considering the high cost of menstrual pads and the economic reality in the country that hinders adolescent girls’ access to them, the girls were taught how to locally sew cotton fabrics with polythene to serve the same purpose.
Addressing the adolescent girls, the Chairperson of NAWOJ, Rashida Yusuf, said that given the health benefits of personal and menstrual hygiene, as well as the importance of sexual reproductive health education, the association deemed it necessary to make the sensitisation part of the celebration.
Some of the girls, Khadija Abdullahi from Anguwan Sarki in the Tirwun community and Ruƙayya Abdurrahman, appreciated NAWOJ for enlightening them on the need to hygienically take care of their head, armpit and pubic hairs.
The Village Head of Tirwun, Alhaji Muhammad Tirwun, said the sensitisation exercise was timely, considering the community’s need for such knowledge. He expressed gratitude to NAWOJ and UNICEF’s Bauchi Field Office for choosing the area to conduct the event.
