The Gombe State House of Assembly has adopted an observation forwarded by the State Governor, Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, calling for the inclusion of local security outfits in the amended Gombe State Security, Traffic and Environmental Commission (GOSTEC) law, which was passed in September last year.
A letter read by the Clerk of the House, Barrister Rukayyatu Adamu Jalo, highlighted the Governor’s recommendation that the services of hunters, vigilante groups, and voluntary security members be incorporated to strengthen the state’s security system.
Speaker of the House, Abubakar Mohammed Luggerewo, said the move would enhance community policing and improve cooperation among security agencies to promote peace and stability across the state.
In another development, the House received a fact-finding team from Nasarawa State. The team is visiting all 36 state Assemblies to assess the level of legislative autonomy.
Team leader and Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Head of Civil Service, Nasarawa State, Mrs. Belinda Oyugbenu, commended Gombe State, noting that it is among the first five states visited. She stressed that for the legislature to function effectively, it must be fully independent.
Responding, Speaker Luggerewo appreciated the team’s visit and described it as “democracy in action.” He confirmed that the Gombe Assembly enjoys full autonomy, including consolidated salaries and other entitlements supported by the state government.
He also revealed that Gombe state government, under Governor Inuwa Yahaya, has awarded a contract for a new Assembly complex equipped with modern facilities to provide a conducive environment for legislative work.
The Speaker concluded that many developmental strides have been achieved, as a result of the cordial relationship between the legislature and the executive in the state.
