Over 8,000 applicants have shown interest in filling 500 teaching vacancies in Zamfara State, as part of a phased recruitment of 2,000 teachers.

The teacher recruitment exercise is in line with the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project to enhance girls’ education in the state.

Chairman of the Recruitment Committee and Chairman of the State Civil Service Commission, Alhaji Aliyu Mohammed Tukur, revealed this during a radio programme in Gusau.

He said the recruitment would take place in four stages, with 500 teachers employed per batch to ensure transparency and efficiency in the process.

The first phase will focus on core science subjects such as Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and ICT as well as English language with applications received through an online portal.

State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Malam Wadato Madawaki, noted that the state had not recruited teachers in the past 12 years.

He expressed hope that with World Bank support through the AGILE project, the sector will improve, especially in rural areas where teacher shortage is acute.
