The Federal Government has mobilised over 1.2 billion US dollars to support the delivery of maternal and child healthcare services across the country under its Comprehensive Emergency Obstetrics and Newborn Care, (CEmONC) initiative.
The initiative targets women and children through one functional secondary healthcare facility in each of the 774 local government areas of the federation.
Technical Assistant to the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr Ashiru Adamu Abubakar, disclosed this at the dissemination of the CEmONC Health Facilities Assessment and Report, held at the State Ministry of Health.
Dr Ashiru Abubakar explained that the funds were secured by the Minister, Professor Ali Pate, and would be utilised based on the level of commitment shown by individual state governments.
According to him, a compact had already been signed before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by the Minister, state governors and development partners, outlining specific criteria each state must meet to benefit from the intervention.
He said under the initiative, pregnant women would receive free emergency services during antenatal, delivery and postnatal care at designated secondary healthcare facilities.
State Commissioner for Health, Dr Sani Mohammed Dambam, said rehabilitation works had commenced in some of the twenty evaluated secondary healthcare facilities, assuring that the remaining ones would be upgraded within three months.
At the meeting, four evidence-based documents were presented to the Commissioner for Health, witnessed by the state’s Executive Chairmen of health agencies, representative of the State Head of Service, state health ministry directors, development partners, the media and other stakeholders.
