The Kano State Police Command has launched a thorough investigation into an incident that occurred on May 25, 2025, in Rano Local Government Area, which led to the death of a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and a suspect who was in police custody.
This was contained in a media statement signed by the Public relations officer of the Command SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa and made available to journalist in Kano.
The statement explained that the incident sparked widespread unrest, with miscreants attacking the Rano Police Division, looting, and setting parts of it ablaze.
According to reports, a motorcycle mechanic, Abdullahi Musa, was arrested and detained for reckless and dangerous riding.
While in custody, the suspect showed signs of weakness and was rushed to Rano General Hospital, where he unfortunately passed away.
Following the incident, some miscreants mobilized and attacked the police division, resulting in the death of the DPO and destruction of property.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, PhD, has ordered a comprehensive and transparent investigation to identify the remote and immediate causes of the incidents and bring those responsible for any wrongdoing to justice.
The investigation is currently underway, and the police command has assured the public of its commitment to maintaining peace and public order in the state.
The police command has appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their hands, allowing the investigation to progress uninterrupted.
The command has also assured the public that it will do everything possible to bring the perpetrators of the violence to justice.
“Twenty-seven (27) suspects have been arrested in connection with the incidents, and the police command is working to identify and apprehend any additional individuals who may have been involved.”
The police command has commiserated with the family of the deceased DPO, who paid the supreme price in active service.
The Emir of Rano, His Highness, Ambassador Dr. Mohammed Isah Umar (Autan Bawo 19), has also received a condolence visit from the Commissioner of Police.
The situation has been brought under control, and normalcy has been restored in the area.
The police command is working to ensure that peace and order are maintained in the state, and the public is urged to cooperate with the authorities during this investigation.
