As Catholics around the world mark the 59th World Communications Day, media practitioners have been called upon to embrace responsible communication, spiritual reflection, and promote national unity in the face of ongoing social and economic challenges.
Director of Social Communications in the Diocese of Yola, Reverend Father Moses Ma’aji made the call during a homily at Saint Monica’s Catholic Church, Bachure.
Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Share With Gentleness the Hope That Is in Your Hearts,” Fr. Ma’aji emphasized the need for Christians to imbibe the spirit of gentleness in both speech and action.
“Words are powerful tools. As we commemorate this Communication Sunday, let us be mindful of how we use them. Let our words bring healing, not hurt; let our communication reflect the light of Christ,” he said.
Drawing inspiration from the Gospel of John 17:20–26, where Jesus prays for the unity of His followers, Fr. Ma’aji stressed the power of prayer and the importance of fostering unity.
He urged the faithful to pray fervently for the nation and its leaders, noting that spiritual support remains vital in navigating these trying times.
Similarly, in his message, Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Raymond Danbona, who is also the pioneer Director of Communications in the Diocese, encouraged both the congregation and media professionals to choose their words carefully and promote messages that inspire peace and harmony.
“We must speak plainly, clearly, and with love. Language should not incite violence or division, but should bring joy, comfort, and truth,” Fr. Danbona said.
World Communications Day was established in 1967 by Pope Paul VI to draw attention to the Church’s growing involvement in the field of social communication and media.
It is traditionally observed on the Sunday before Pentecost, which falls on June 1 this year.
This year’s message, penned by Pope Francis before his passing on April 21, 2025, calls on all communicators to reject hostile rhetoric and embrace dialogue that restores humanity and dignity.
The observance of World Communications Day offers the Church and its members an opportunity to reflect on the role of media and communication in evangelization and social responsibility.
