Bauchi State Government says it will not hesitate to dismiss from service any School Manager or Teacher found with the case of insubordination, abuse of office or mismanagement of educational infrastructure.

This is coming after a Headteacher at Dagarau Tsohuwa Primary School in Katagum local government was caught authorising the use of pupils desk for local parties and wedding events, as well as the absence of pupils and zero academic activities one week after resumption.

The Executive Chairman State Universal Basic Education Board SUBEB Alhaji Adamu Duguri gave the warning during the inspection and monitoring of schools resumption for the 2024/25 Second term academic session.

Alhaji Adamu Duguri who listed some of the efforts by government to address welfare and infrastructure deficit in the basic education sub sector to include implementation of the new minimum wage and allocation of funds annually for the provision of teaching and learning materials, wondered why some school managers and teachers were abusing such privilege.

“The burden on government especially in the area of infrastructure and welfare is enomour and so it is duty bound upon every teacher to work hard and avoid committing any atrocity because any small thing now can lead to dismissal, as you are all aware it was a heculian task to ensure that teachers were included in the implementation of the new minimum wage in the state”, he says.

He directed the Education Secretary Katagum Local Education Authority LEA to write a suspension letter to the affected Headteacher to serve as warning and deterrent to other education officials committing such atrocities.

“I went to a primary school and met the place empty without any sign of academic activity, I asked about the Headteacher and was told he is at home. We went and met him sleeping, he came out drunk and on our way out we saw a local animal carrier loaded with School Desks and we were told it was from a local wedding party, how can we allow this to continue”, Adamu Duguri lamented.

The SUBEB Executive Chairman further warned teachers against laxity, lateness and absenteeism, noting that the board has instituted a reward and punishment mechanism for performing and erring staff in its effort to improve the standard of education in the state.

According to him, the Mega Schools being built across various Zonal headquarters of the state were initiated to provide access and quality education to thousands of Out of School Children and dropouts roaming the streets.

At Central Primary School Bulkachuwa, Adamu Duguri who commended the entire community and other education stakeholders for their effort towards the enrolment of large number of children, advised teachers against untidiness and sitting under the tree.

While at Hassan Tagwai Central Primary School Azare, the SUBEB Executive Chairman said the essence of the visitation was to orient, ginger and motivate teachers to put in their best towards instilling sound education and moral values on the pupils.

In other schools visited to include Yolawo Primary School Chinade and Dagarau Tsohuwa Primary School, the team witnessed low turnout of pupils and total absence of both pupils and teachers respectively.

In a remark, the Education Secretary Katagum LEA Adamu Alhaji Muhammad appreciated the Executive Chairman and his team for the visit and promised to ensure constant monitoring of schools especially in rural communities to guarantee the future of the younger ones.

“Since assuming office, this is the first time I’m having a Chief Executive coming down here by himself to inspect schools and academic activities and we’re grateful for such effort”, he explains.

Schools visited Include Yolawa at Chinade, Dagarau Tsohuwa, Bulkachuwa Central Primary a d Junior Secondary, Hassan Tagwai Central Primary Azare, , Matsango Primary and Junior Secondary, Ahmad Turaki Primary and Junior Secondary among others across Bauchi South and Central Senatorial zones.

Meanwhile, the Emir of Katagum Dr Umar Faruk the second has promised to convene a meeting with District Heads to discuss the abysmal number of pupils in schools especially in rural areas across the emirate.

Dr Umar Faruk who stated this when he received the Executive Chairman SUBEB Alhaji Adamu Duguri alongside the board monitoring at his palace, said the continued refusal by parents to send their wards to school is becoming alarming.

He promised to embark on inspection visit especially to schools identified with low turnout or total absence of both pupils and teachers despite continued sensitisation and awareness campaign on the need to send children to school for the second term academic session.

Dr Umar Faruk who expressed happiness with the large turnout of pupils within Azare town and other Districts, appealed to SUBEB to sustain the monitoring exercise for better outcome.
