In a bid to address the lingering clashes between herders and farmers, the Yobe State Government has introduced a groundbreaking initiative to train herders in aquaculture production.
The Acting Permanent Secretary for the state Ministry of Livestock, Dr. Ibrahim Goni, stated that the Yobe State Government has taken the step to provide alternative livelihoods for herders and reduce tensions between them and farmers.
While presenting certificates to participants of the fish production training at the Jakusko Nasari Grazing Reserve, Dr Goni explained that the programme is designed to equip herders with the skills and knowledge needed to engage in aquaculture production.
In addition, the Permanent Secretary presented the allocation of 40 settlements constructed by the state in collaboration with the federal government, for nomadic settlers in the grazing centre.
He explained that the effort is part of Governor Mai Mala Buni’s strategy to establish ranching and grazing reserves, which have been in place for many years.
Dr. Goni added that the Yobe State Government has also allocated significant funds to support social sector development, including initiatives that benefit herders and farmers.
He appealed to members of the Herders-Farmers group to support the government’s policy and programme aimed at providing a lasting solution to the menace.
Speaking on behalf of the nomadic groups, Lamido Hassan commended Governor Buni’s administration for its preventive measures towards addressing herders-farmers clashes in the state.
