The Kano State Government, in partnership with the Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Change (PACE), has officially launched its Climate Change Policy. This landmark policy provides a strategic roadmap for mitigation, adaptation, and inclusive climate governance across all sectors of development in the state.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, held at the Armani Event Centre in Kano, Governor Abba Yusuf, represented by Secretary to the State Government, Ibrahim Farouk, described the event as a major milestone in his administration’s efforts to reposition Kano as a progressive sub-national actor in climate governance and environmental systems.
The policy focuses on key priority areas, including,Clean Energy Transition,Sustainable Land Use,Green Land Spot and Community Resilience.
Governor Yusuf emphasized that the policy is complemented by a climate change action plan, which translates the administration’s political commitment into a practical and coordinated implementation framework.
He also highlighted the government’s green energy initiatives, such as the solarization of public infrastructure, which aims to reduce public costs and enhance public safety and security.
The governor reiterated his administration’s plan to plant 5 million trees in 2025 to reduce land degradation, improve air quality, enhance urban aesthetics, and support biodiversity.
The launch event also marked the inauguration of the Kano State Climate Change Steering Committee, Secretariat, and Technical Working Groups, which will oversee the implementation, coordination, and accountability of climate actions across the state.
William Robinson, Head of Governance and Stability at the British High Commission, commended the Kano State Government for this significant milestone, stating that the policy reflects a deep understanding of the urgent challenge posed by climate change.
He said the UK has pledged to support Kano in strengthening climate governance, unlocking access to climate finance, and promoting innovative initiatives like the Waste to Wealth Programme.
The ceremony was graced by senior government officials and other stakeholders.
