Community members in flood-affected areas have been encouraged to embrace the spirit of humanitarianism to reduce the devastating effects of flooding, such as loss of life, injuries, and displacement, which significantly affect flood-prone communities.

The effects of flooding also include property damage, infrastructure disruption, and economic hardship in its aftermath.

The effects of flooding are often accompanied by additional challenges such as waterborne diseases, food shortages, and long-term psychological trauma.

A community member in Anguwan Gada, one of the areas affected by the recent flood in Hong Local Government Area, Elam Anthony, said community-led approaches helped in reducing the impact of the disaster in their area.

Anthony described humanitarian aid by community members as “first aid” in disaster management and called on government at all levels to complement their efforts.

This comes as residents received WASH and dignity kits from the Adamawa State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, RUWASSA, and the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF.

Beneficiaries of the support, including Safiya Ibrahim, Priscilla Joseph Hassan Ibrahim, and Fatima Mohammed, expressed gratitude and promised to make judicious use of the items in protecting their families from the effects of the flood.

The Secretary of Adamawa State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, RUWASSA, Widwamna Anthony, commended members of the community for their selfless service to displaced persons in the area.

Anthony encouraged other community members to emulate these humanitarian gestures in order to reduce the effects of flooding on people in flood-prone areas.

The affected communities include Thabu, Crossover, Anguwan Gada, and Kububang, with the disaster impacting more than two hundred households in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

Items in the WASH and dignity kits included antibacterial bathing soaps, laundry detergent, reusable menstrual pads, child potties, among other vital hygiene materials.
