BAUCHI/VAI: Police to Strengthen Relationship with the Public to Curb Crimes.

The police in Bauchi State has restarted commitment to initiate orientation programmes for its personnel to strengthen police community relationship to reduce the rate of crimes in the state.

The State Police Commissioner CP Auwal Musa Muhammad gave the indication at a dialogue session on mutual accountability and community scorecard in Ningi Local Government Area.

The dialogue was organized by a Non Governmental Organization, Voluntary Aid Initiative VAI with support from International Alert, Nigeria funded by UK International Development.

CP Auwal Musa Muhammad represented by Ningi Divisional Police Officer Abba Abubakar Ali noted that the personnel should also be oriented to resist any of the citizens’ attempt to compromise ethics and code of their operations.

While appealing to the public to assist police with useful information that would enhance their operations CP Auwal Musa Muhammad solicited for the recruitment of qualified personnel into the police force.

In a remark, the Programme Officer Zainab Muhammad Hassan expressed delight to receive representatives of the State Commissioner of Police, various community leaders, local government officials and civil society organizations.

Zainab Muhammad Hassan who said Voluntary Aid Initiative is a non-governmental, nonprofits making and youths led organization established in 2008 is engaged in peace building, conflict prevention.

Others are health emergencies, Gender Based Violence as well as thematic areas like WASH, Education, human rights, enhance livelihood through household economic strengthening to reduce poverty.

She said the NGO in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force is implementing a police reform initiative project through mutual accountability and community scorecard consultation in Zamfara and Bauchi States.

According to her the project is aimed at enhancing police, public mutual accountability through the establishment of community dialogue on sensitization and awareness creation.

While presenting issues the community members identified to the police, the Facilitator, Alhaji Shu’aibu Ali Kobi said progress can only be achieved when the police and public work together, share responsibilities and hold each other accountable for their actions.

Shu’aibu Ali Kobi noted that the dialogue with the Police and the critical stakeholders would strengthen partnership, enhance accountability mechanisms and improve the lives of citizens.

He stressed the need to support the police to carry out their assigned responsibilities and cautioned them against abuse of some human right stressing that the dialogue would improve Police community relations.

The session has in attendance Police Community Relations Committee PCRC, Red Cross, Miyetti Allah, Faith Base Organizations, traditional and religious leaders as well as Women and Youth Groups among others.
